Global Emergency Medicine

Global Emergency Medicine is about the intersection between any area of emergency care, and global health. By global health, we mean contexts of access- or resource- limited healthcare. While global health normally implies healthcare delivery in  low or middle income countries (LMIC), inequity happens in high income countries too, for example, among marginalised populations. Global Emergency Medicine is about working for justice and excellence in emergency healthcare, globally!

Format

The Global Emergency Medicine pre-course will be delivered in two parts: a series of short virtual lectures delivered a few weeks before the conference, and an afternoon’s in-person workshop in room a, on Wednesday 23rd September afternoon and Thursday 24th September morning (see below more detailed programme), in Panacéa Conseil centre, 22 Rue Georges Picquart, 75017 Paris, Paris, France (please note it is different location than EUSEM Congress 2026!)

The course will be submitted for CME accreditation by the EACCME®.

The virtual lectures will cover a wide range of global EM topics including: overview of the need for EM in LMIC, capacity building, EM education and training in LMIC, Global EM fellowships, research, quality and safety, clinical hot topics, networks and resources, ‘what to do before you go’.

The in-person workshop will comprise a round-robin of four workstations focussing on themes drawn out in the lectures, utilising hands-on practical exercises and interactive discussion. These stations include: ED design and triage in an LMIC, strategic planning exercise, clinical care with limited resources, EM education and training in LMIC.

Objectives

  • Justify the Significance of Global EM: Articulate the critical role of emergency medicine in improving health outcomes and equity on a global scale.
  • Identify Engagement Pathways: Explore diverse opportunities and practical methods for getting involved in global health initiatives.
  • Evaluate Systemic Challenges: Analyze the complexities of clinical care, research, and education within resource-limited or developing health systems.
  • Apply Practical Skillsets: Demonstrate foundational tools and clinical skills essential for effective practice in global emergency settings.
