The Protected Airway Course is based on the concept of “Learning Spaces“, offering maximum flexibility. Participants can move freely between six different areas, depending on their interests and individual learning needs. The course is accredited with 7 CMEs by the EACCME®.

Each Learning Space provides an innovative combination of theory and practice:

• Posters with QR codes give direct access to the American Protected Airway Course e-learning. Short, concise videos and podcasts can be conveniently accessed via mobile devices.
• Practical application follows immediately: participants can practice their skills on high-quality simulators and refine their techniques through interactive exercises with our experienced faculty from DGINA.

In addition, the course includes simulations, engaging lectures, and case discussions, all based on the latest international literature and current guidelines.

In emergency medicine, a “difficult airway” is far more than just an anatomical challenge. Medical conditions, trauma, hemodynamic instability, pathophysiological considerations, teamwork dynamics, and the need for rapid decision-making under stress all play a critical role. The PAC addresses these complex factors, preparing participants for the real-world challenges of airway management.

The course objectives align with the content of the learning spaces, providing tailored knowledge and skills for both beginners and specialists. As the learning is self-directed, participants can choose content that suits their level and interests.

• The art of peri-intubation management with a focus on:
  • pH balance
  • Heart failure
  • Hypotension
  • Preoxygenation in critically ill patients

Learning Space: “Anatomic Difficult Airway”

• Handling hyperangulated video laryngoscopy (HAVL)
• Bougie techniques
• Fiberoptic intubation
• Video-assisted flexible optical intubation (VAFI)
• Management of the burned airway

Learning Space: “Pediatric Airway”

• Special considerations for pediatric emergency airway management
• Bag-mask ventilation
• Supraglottic airways
• Video laryngoscopy
• Use of bougies and mandrins in pediatric patients

• Reviewing video laryngoscopy recordings and clinical cases
