Acute Psychiatric Emergencies
Format
This is half day pre-course taking place on Wednesday 23 September from 13:00-17:30 CEST in room CORONIS & HELIOS in Panacéa Conseil centre, 22 Rue Georges Picquart, 75017 Paris, Paris, France (please note it is different location than EUSEM Congress 2026!)
Overview
This 0.5-day intensive workshop addresses the critical “Golden Hour” of psychiatric emergencies in the ED. It combines evidence-based verbal de-escalation techniques, a logic-based algorithm for medical clearance of “mimics,” and high-fidelity simulation for managing agitated adolescents and high-risk suicide assessments.

Learning Objectives
After completing the precourse, participants will be able to:
- Apply a shared, structured approach to acute psychiatric emergencies.
- Rapidly secure patient, staff, and environmental safety using non‑coercive techniques.
- Differentiate medical from primary psychiatric pathology, including overdose and delirium.
- Demonstrate advanced verbal de‑escalation and human‑factors‑informed communication.
- Select and safely administer pharmacological strategies for agitation and behavioural disturbance.
- Navigate duty of care, documentation, and Mental Health Act considerations.
